Proceeds from the recital will support the
Association for Volunteer Services,
and particularly its Learning to
CARE Program to actively engage students in Lebanese schools in
volunteering and community service.
After a brief introduction to AVS and the Learning to CARE Program, Dr.
Mihaly will perform selections by Scarlatti, Beethoven, Chopin and
Lecuona, as well as arrangements of Lebanese folk songs. In addition,
his wife Joanne (also an accomplished pianist), will join him for duets
by Brahms and Gottschalk.

Dr. Paul Mihaly
began piano studies at the age of five in Santa Rosa, California. He
studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and completed his
Bachelor of Music degree at the renowned Juilliard School of Music, New
York. He then earned his MA from UC Santa Barbara and DMA from the
University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His principal teachers
have included Irene Fryer, Adolph Baller, Ilona Kabos, Dr. Erno Daniel
and Daniel Pollack. He has performed extensively in California,
including appearances with the San Francisco, Thousand Oaks, and Santa
Rosa Symphonies. In 1997, he toured Lebanon, performing and presenting
master classes at the Lebanese National Conservatory of Music, the
American University of Beirut, and the University of Balamand. The
following year, he toured South Korea and performed as a soloist with
the Korean Chamber Ensemble of Seoul and the Cheju Youth Symphony. In
1998, he moved to Mountain View where he and his wife teach privately.
The Association for Volunteer Services
is a non-governmental organization established in 1998 “to promote,
facilitate, and improve volunteering and community service throughout
Lebanon and beyond” through workshops, publications, and consulting
services. Dr. Pa tricia
Mihaly Nabti (sister of Dr. Mihaly) is the founder and Director of AVS
and author of its book, Learning to
CARE: Education, Volunteering, and Community Service, the only
comprehensive manual to help schools develop service programs. It has
been sold to specialists in volunteering and school service worldwide. AVS
has been the National Lead Agency
for Global Youth Service Days in Lebanon since 2001 and the National
Representative for the International Association for Volunteer Effort
since 2002. Copies of Learning to CARE will be available at the
performances for the discounted price of $30 (cost online is $35 plus
postage).
