A CULTURE OF VOLUNTEERING 2010-2011

Learning to CARE Book Certification 
and Awards Program

 
The Arab Initiative to Foster a Culture of Volunteering has established the Learning to CARE Book Certification and Award Program to:
a. Encourage authors and publishers to produce books that foster a culture of volunteering in Arab youth, and
b. Provide a guide to educators who want to select books for their students that strengthen their school service program.
 
CERTIFICATION:
Books and manuscripts submitted for review will be judged on their fulfillment of the criteria below.  All books that fulfill the Learning to CARE Criteria will:
1) Be given a certificate indicating that they have fulfilled the criteria
2) Be included in our list of certified books – on our website and in a list for distribution through our Learning to CARE training programs
3) Will be allowed to put the logo of the certification program on their book and an explanation of the certification program inside the book (approved wording will be provided).
4) In addition, every effort will be made to incorporate certified books into appropriate lesson plans, available online.
 
AWARDS
Five of the certified books will be awarded the \learning to CARE Book Award as the most outstanding books fulfilling the Learning to CARE Criteria.  Each of the fivce award winning books will be given a cash prize of $500 to be given to the person or company holding the copyright, with a minimum of one award per age category (assuming there are qualified books in each age category to be considered for the award):
·         Ages 3-5
·         Ages 6-11
·         Ages 12-18
 
Learning to CARE Criteria for Certification:
The book must be in literary (modern standard) Arabic or bilingual Arabic/English or Arabic/French
1) The story must have volunteering as a prominent theme
2) The book should help motivate the reader to volunteer, help the reader understand how to be good volunteer, and/or present the story of one or more actual role models of volunteering.  Volunteers in the story may volunteer as individuals or groups, on their own or through an association, and for any type of volunteering 9for the elderly, disabled, sick, orphans, the environment, etc)
3) The story must be original
4) The story must be written for one of these three age levels:
·         Age 3-5
·         Ages 6-11
·         Ages 12-18
5) The story must be culturally authentic, though it is understood that there are different Arab subcultures, modern and traditional
6) The submission must be an already published book or a print-ready manuscript, including illustration.
 
Criteria for the Awards:
Only certified books will be considered for the awards.  The awards will be for the most well-written creative, relevant, interesting and inspiriting books in each age category, selected by a team of judges chosen by the Initiative Advisory Board.
 
Note: This certification and awards program does not provide funding for printing the book.
 
Procedures for Submission:
1) For those who would like a critique of the book with a commentary that could improve its content, please submit the manuscript – by no later than July 5th.
2) To be considered for the 2010 awards, three print-ready copies of the manuscript or three published copies of the book must be sent to the Arab Volunteer Initiative, P.O. Box 136104, Beirut Lebanon, or delivered to the Initiative office at the Chawkatly Building, 6th floor, Charles Helou Boulevard, Saifi, Beirut or an e-manuscript (pdf file) must be sent to initiative@avs.org.lb to be no later than August 15th.
3) The book must be submitted with the following information: Title of book, name of author, name of publisher (if published), contact name, phone number and email address.
4) The books earning the certification and awards will be publicly announced at the First Regional Conference on Volunteering to be held in Lebanon September 15-18, 2010.
